My Booky Wook by Russell Brand

  1. My Booky Wook is an autobiography about Russell Brand. He writes about the struggles he faced throughout his entire life. Russell Brand is an English Comedian who struggled with very serious drug and sex addictions. Brand started his story from the very beginning from his childhood to adulthood. He thoroughly explains that the down falls he experienced with drugs and sex. He explained that he was addicted to anything and everything, which made it difficult for him to succeed in life, but as the book continues the reader discovers that Brand’s reason for writing this book was to tell everyone that there is always hope and that redemption is always possible no matter how low one has fallen.

I believe Russell Brand represents redemption well, because he had to redeem himself after he had such a great struggle with drug addictions and dysfunctional relationships. He was able to truthfully talk about his journey with addictions and relationships because it was his life story and is able to write how it actually feels to go through something so difficult rather than just empathizing with people.

I thought that this book was written very well because the message was clearly conveyed and it has a powerful effect. Brand was very truthful with his stories and did not “sugar coat” the experiences he faced. Although, some of the parts of his life were very disturbing to read, it was necessary to include these events to make his message as powerful as it is, but at the same time he had the right amount of humour. Also, his personality was really shown throughout this book because it is written as if he was having a conversation with the reader, which made it a lighter and easier read. Overall, I thought My Booky Wook had a very important message and was delivered with the perfect balance between his serious and comedic voice.
