Robert M. Nideffer’s thesis tells the reader what is going through their mind during an athletic or academic performance, when they must perform well under certain circumstances. He believes that, what a person is subconsciously thinking impacts their ability to perform to their full potential. Throughout his book, Nideffer presents his theory of conscious thinking and demonstrates how it affects an athlete’s performance while playing a sport. Also, the author teaches the reader how to play in the zone, rather than chocking during an athletic or academic endeavour. He establishes many ways for an athlete to elevate their performance, and bring it to a superior level.
In addition, Nideffer uses an abundance of text features to make his thesis clear and precise. He drives each of his main points into the reader’s mind, throughout the entire book. Psyched to Win has countless strengths that drive his main points to the reader. One method he uses is text features. For example, his use of powerful italics throughout the book re-iterates the points Nideffer is trying to make clear to the reader. Nideffer identifies athletes’ problems, and shows them practical solutions to solve these problems; even when they seem impossible to overcome. An example of this is when he tells the reader that seeing a therapist is a practical solution for physiological problems because he argues that they are actually the result of psychological barriers that an athlete faces. This ability to understand and communicate his ideas effectively and precisely is a difficult task to perform, but Nideffer does it impeccably and makes it seem effortless. The author tells the reader that not all obstacles are physical; instead Nideffer believes most are psychological complications. This is a weakness of the book because it represents the author’s bias. Nideffer uses a solution of self hypnosis to solve these psychological complications, which is another occurrence were the reader sees his bias. There are several different methods to overcome athletic performance barriers that Nideffer fails to mention, which do not deal with mastery of the psyche.
All and all, Nideffer is successful in making his thesis clear and easy to understand throughout the book. I applaud you Robert M. Nideffer for Psyched to Win, it was truly a stellar piece of work.
