The Way I Am by Eminem

  1. The rap game has definitely changed, from the time Eminem was first starting out in his career up until now. With the help of Sacha Jenkins, Eminem is able to describe the changes that have occurred throughout the time he’s been involved with rap and the great impact he had once he started to get noticed. He does this through telling his whole story, from when he was just a kid dreaming of becoming a famous rapper, to the time he became famous and touring all around the world.
In this book, Eminem and Sacha Jenkins work off each other to explain the things that have occurred from the very beginning of Eminem’s life. If someone had no idea who or what Eminem was all about, they would after reading this because it is so descriptive. The thesis isn’t clear in this book, as it is a biography, so you really have to think hard about what you truly believe Eminem and Sacha Jenkins are trying to say for a thesis. Whatever you were to pick would be perfect. The reason for this is because the authors have so much success in giving such expressive details of the history of Eminem’s life. This helped me fully understand what conditions the rap game was in before Eminem, when Eminem was part of it, and now, when Eminem is still making music but is totally clean and sober.
As a reader, and a fan of Eminem since the third grade, I was very entertained throughout the whole book. This book was so enjoyable for me as a fan of Eminem for a various reasons. For example, this book was written by Eminem, what more can I say? You’re getting the full story from the guy the book is about, by himself. Eminem talks about the challenges he had to overcome to get where he is. For example, having a kid and trying to produce money to help his family, when he was starting up in the rap game. This book is great for any Eminem fan or any person who can respect someone who can overcome as many difficulties as Eminem did as it’s his full life story; nothing is left out, nothing censored, everything is thrown down on the table. These things make this book very informative about the rap game throughout history.
In this book, there are very few weaknesses at all, and for the weaknesses found, they out overcame by the positives. The only weakness, really, is the fact that Eminem uses many “rap terms” that someone who not educated about these would have no idea what they mean. Eminem does explain them though, but in his own terms, so this could be difficult to certain readers. I don’t think Eminem really cares or not whether people understand them or not. There is also no bias at all, as it is written by Eminem. The only thing you could possibly say is that Eminem has bias towards Proof and Hailie as he is constantly referring back to them. This isn’t the case though; Proof was Eminem’s best friend who got shot in 2006 and Hailie is Eminem’s daughter, of course he is going to be talking about them as they are the ones he loves.
In conclusion, Eminem and Sacha Jenkins did an excellent job in telling Eminem’s story and every last detail involved with it. The way the book was written was extremely enjoyable and respectable to any fan of Eminem. Eminem has affected the rap game in such a positive way, and still is today, and he is known all over the world for his funny antics and his insane rapping skills as a white boy from the hard streets of Detroit.
