Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom

  1. “Tuesdays with Morrie” is a book with enlightening wisdoms that are applicable to most readers. In this biography, the author, Mitch, spends time each Tuesdays with Morrie, his dying professor from college, giving him life “lessons”. Albom wrote this book to share his lessons of Morrie that teaches you about important concepts in life like family, marriage, culture, and money which will lead people into living more fulfilled life.

The book’s main focus is to allow the readers to rethink about essential concepts that are often clouded by advertised values that the media culture offers, and also the importance of optimistic outlook. The culture befogs the real values of life by wrongly directing people to believe that more is always good, and to be happy and in control, you must climb high up in social rank. This lead people to worship the money as their idol and make them falsely believe everything else, like relationship with other people and family matters are only secondary subjects that would be fixed automatically when you are financially successful. This is not the case, as shown by Mitch who feels that something is missing from the core of his life even after his success. It also emphasizes how pessimistic perspective forces people to function inefficiently. Good example is given by how different Morrie and Mitch’s opinion is about the matter of Morrie’s terminal disease. Mitch simply sees it as the curse of life, while Morrie sees it as a blessing because if you die instantly, you do not get the time you need to wrap things up in your life, such as “living funeral” he did. He could have just weep all day and whine about his terminal disease and get nothing done, but instead makes the best out of it by seeing it as a positive event. Morrie substitutes as a real life example of how efficiently you can function when you have your priorities and values set correctly.

One major strength of this book is author’s ability to make the reader understand his points. It is very easy to comprehend due to ample amount of examples that helps the reader to easily understand author’s point. Author uses himself as an example to show the readers how someone can be successful financial wise, but miss out on what is truly crucial in life. Another technique that author uses is how he reminds us what we already know, but easily forgets. We know we cannot take anything when we die, but we try our best to earn most fortune. I could not find any major weakness in this book as everything that Morrie teaches is like a wisdom that holds its values in most circumstances.

Overall, this book is a bestseller for a reason and it doubtlessly aids the reader to define what is more important in life. It has the power to change many people’s lives by simply tweaking their views on looking at things. I would recommend this book to anyone.
