  1. Caught in the Act is a non-fiction novel about the journey a family has gone through after being attacked by a serial killer. The book was written by Jeannie McDonough, the mother of Shea McDonough, who was Adam Leroy Lane’s final victim before he was incarcerated. The book starts goes back and forth between Lane’s killing spree and Jeannie McDonough’s life before the attack.
McDonough starts out with a prologue about her family and how the kids were growing up and everything was slowing down for her. She talks about how everything was normal about that summer and that they never imagined having such a violent event happen to her family. In the first chapter she talks about Darlene Ewalt, Adam Leroy Lane’s first victim, and continues chronologically in how events happened. After giving some details of her life she goes back to writing about Lane’s truck route that leads him to Patricia Brooks, another survivor of his attack, and Monica Massaro, who unfortunately was brutally mutilated by Adam Leroy Lane. After giving details about each case McDonough then goes to describe the events of how police officials from the different states were able to connect the murders and describes the trials and obstacles that they needed to push through. Jeannie McDonough describes life through the trials and her concerns of how her family is affected by this attack, she describes the tension and the worries and fears she has and how she has gotten through this horrendous event.
The book was very detailed on how things were done during the trial and it was easy to comprehend because the way Jeannie McDonough described the events throughout the book was from her point of view and as a civilian and not a well law educated official. It was very interesting to read because she wrote it in a way that you could connect with her and feel that you were part of what was going on. She went into so much detail that you got a vivid image of the scene but she did not go into so much detail to deter you from reading because of the malicious murders.
Jeannie McDonough clearly states that her main belief is that because of what happened that night her family is stronger as a whole. She gives a strong image that everyone came through okay and that because of this brush with death they have a better outlook on life. She gives you inspiration to think positively and live each day to the fullest because unfortunately you never know when your last day on earth will be.
I enjoyed this book so much that I could really not find a major weakness. The only weakness is like with a lot of books some authors put a bit too much detail in which is common. Another minor weakness would be that there were dull moments but that too is also a common occurrence in books.
