Beyond Belief: Finding the Strength to Come Back by Josh Hamilton

  1. Baseball isn’t the easiest game in the world. If you fail 70% of the time you’re a superstar, you have to have a tremendous amount of mental strength to deal with it. Josh Hamilton is one of the greatest baseball players of all time but to get there he had to learn how to dig deep for this mental strength a long time ago. This novel gives the readers and outlook of how Josh’s life has changed and how he overcame all his problems that were delt to him throughout his minor league career. This book gives us a outline of Josh’s experiments with drugs and alcohol. The books main argument in my regards is that you aren’t born with success and you can’t take it for granted, you have to want it more than you want to breathe, more than you want to sleep. Once you’ve realised this then you will be successful, because through success you are able to achieve greatness.
Josh has not only changed the Major league baseball with his story, but the whole world. Josh is very bias towards himself because it is a biography about his entire life from child hood to present. The audience is kept attached to the book because of the captivity of Josh’s story, his argument is able to keep readers into the novel. The first few chapters of the novel are childhood stories where Josh describes where he’s been and what kind of kid he was. Josh gives great detail to keep you on edge of when he was at the top of his game in high school and even as a toddler. He shows how more advanced he was then other players and how humble he was about it. From here Josh gets into how he was brought into his addiction, his encounters and how he dealt with them. This is a tough story to let out for any athlete because of their profession. Josh can’t hide from it though he says; this is why he can keep his audience so interested throughout the book. He is honest with every story or detail. A major strength of the book was the ability to keep the reader intrigued an entertained throughout the novel. Josh Is very truthful with the audience by telling his story with every detail whether it be wild, messed up or embarrassing. These are reasons why his novel is a tremendous success. Even if you aren’t a baseball fan it is easy to lose yourself in this book because of its honest stories. Josh took his story to the 2009 Homerun derby where he set the record for most homeruns in a round. He also led the league that year with most RBI’s and runs.Josh did not only capture his dream of playing professional baseball after overcoming his addiction, but also was selected starting centre fielder for the all-star team in his first three seasons in the big leagues.
