The 50th Law by 50 Cent and Robert Greene

  1. The 50th Law in my opinion is a very motivational book; it is filled with influential and well known leaders. Although Curtis Jackson (50 Cent) worked as an independent and lived as an individual, The 50th Law includes many who have had or needed help to achieve the power they had. Curtis didn’t want any help gaining power, and this book encourages you to discover the power yourself.

The subject of The 50th Law is fearlessness in all of its varieties, for example, overcoming the fear of death and the ability to embrace chaos and change. “Your fears are a kind of prison that confines you within a limited range of action. The less you fear, the more power you will have and the more fully you will live.” This quote speaks for itself, generally stating that is you fear everything, you will gain nothing, but if you fear nothing you will gain power and confidence. “Fear is the oldest and strongest emotion known to man, something deeply inscribed in our nervous system and subconscious.” I believe this is Robert Greene’s thesis because he talks about fear in the past and relates it to 50 Cent’s motives and beliefs. To 50 Cent fearlessness is a belief and it is his way of life because if he was afraid as a hustler on the streets or as a music producer, he wouldn’t have the power and fame he has today.

Greene’s main argument is to motivate the people today to be fearless like Curtis. Providing factual evidence of past events and a day in the life of 50 Cent, Greene obtains a perfect understanding of fearlessness only to share it with the world. “At this moment, he did as Fredrick Douglass did – he decided to ratchet up his anger, energy and fearlessness. Coming so close to death, he understood how short life could be. He would not waste a second.” Greene does this many times in the text; he relates 50’s life to a leader or influential figure in the past. These are people who had the same mindset as 50, who would overcome obstacles in the same fashion. I don’t think The 50th Law has any weaknesses; it is a high school level book with two hundred and eighty-eight pages with an excellent vocabulary and interesting facts. It is both motivating and educational providing the definition of fear you have never seen.

As you my notice through this review I used the word motivate multiple times. This is because before I read this book I had thought it would be and interesting story on 50 Cent’s life. But instead I found this book as a learning opportunity in a whole new category. That is why I believe this is a motivational book, for it encourages 50’s lifestyle and breaks it down for you to note. I encourage you to read this book, and embrace 50 Cent’s mindset to possibly help you with future decision and obstacles.

“When I nearly died it made me think- This can happen again any second. I better hurry and do what I want. I started to live like I never lived before. When the fear of death is gone, then nothing can bother you and nobody can stop you.”
