Non-fiction: Philosophers of Science

  1. The book I decided to read for my English ISU is titled the Philosophers of Science. The primary focus of this book is to look at the works of scientists who used their knowledge and philosophical thinking skills to solve the big questions of their times. The publishers most likely compiled these works to try and expose the general public to some profound pieces of scientific thought. By doing this you can make many people think about the big questions of today, and hopefully come up with some solutions. At the very least this book could motivate people to think and engage with society more. However the one thing the publishers are forgetting is that not everyone believes in some of the philosophy that is used.

Seeing as there are many different authors in this book I will look at scientific thinking from a broader perspective. Every single author in this book asks the reader at some point to be open-minded, so that they can try to expand their horizons. The authors ask this because to fully understand and appreciate their way of thinking, it is necessary for preconceived images of the world to be broken. If you are unable to do this how can you be willing to accept a theory that disproves the earth being the center of the universe? Furthermore it is exactly because these scientists were able to shatter the public’s image of the world, that they are known today as great philosophers. A truly great thinker is not one that is content with what is around him; rather it is one who constantly questions what he knows.

Overall I would suggest this book, but take this advice with a grain of salt. There are many extremely fascinating and profound scientific discoveries in this book, and the way they are proven is borderline ridiculous. On the other hand though some of the English used, especially by the older authors, is extremely hard to understand and I had quite a difficult time comprehending some of the scientific statements. All in all if you are a very scientific or philosophical person this is the book for you. In my mind it stands as one of the most profound books in terms of both of these subjects, and it will constantly challenge the reader.
