Light Blue Reign by Art Chansky

  1. North Carolina basketball is a very high standing program in college sports. It is a very powerful dynasty that is followed by millions of people around the world. North Carolina basketball has grown from almost nothing, to an entity that has reached unforeseen heights. Art Chansky’s main goal is to share as much knowledge on the subject that the reader is willing to absorb. The approach the author takes is very broad but at the same time very narrow sighted. The history of UNC is very grand but he still manages to focus on three men. The book Light Blue Reign discusses how three men, from different upbringings and lifestyles, formed a unique coaching bond that gave the program an immense opportunity for success. Each of the three men had their own way of doing things but their styles ultimately accomplished the same goal. The stories and facts in this book are so comprehensive you would’ve thought the three coaches wrote the book. This is mainly due to the fact that Art Chansky is an avid UNC follower and most of the information gathered to write this book came from personal stories told from each of the three coaches. Another source of his information was from archives from UNC. This book is written for all basketball and college sports fans, whether you’re a die-hard fan or just a casual follower. This book is structured in an order that is easy to follow. It starts from the very beginning of Carolina basketball and works its way up to the present day. This book is not always very clear as it is written for North Carolina fans and outsiders might not know the references. Nonetheless it is easy to follow. A major strength that this book entails is that the detail behind it is so precise that it really makes you learn about the topic. Even if you are the most seasoned UNC historian, there are new bits of information in the book for you. A weakness that is not a cause for worry is that the writer does tend to stray off the main thesis and indulges into other aspects. This is not a bad thing but it added extra content to the book that was unexpected. I believe Light Blue Reign is truly a masterpiece and does the program of North Carolina basketball justice for its excellence.
